Playwrights Lab

Artboard 6

Playwrights Lab demonstrates CAAP's ongoing commitment to Asian Australian Playwrights and creating pathways to Australian mainstage theatres.

Delivered in collaboration with La Boite Theatre, a leader in new Australian work, this day-long program convenes playwrights with artistic leaders, industry experts and established writers. Through facilitated discussion, practical workshops and peer to peer introductions, participants will gain invaluable insights into the programming and commissioning processes, all while forging connections and refining their craft.

At the core of Playwrights Lab is CAAP’s mission to address the underrepresentation of Asian Australian voices on stages. CAAP’s previous playwriting program LOTUS, delivered with Playwriting Australia (now Australian Plays Transform) supported over 70 writers, leaving an indelible mark on the national cultural landscape.

An honorarium will be paid to each of the successful participants.

The Lotus Playwriting Project is one of our most successful skills development programs, initiated by Playwriting Australia in partnership with CAAP and generously supported by the Girgensohn Foundation.

More than 70 emerging writers have participated in the program, benefitting from high level training and mentorship from some of Australia’s most experienced playwrights.

Four Lotus writers – Katrina Irawati Graham, Shari Indriani, Ngoc Phan and Natesha Somasundaram - were featured at the 2016 National Play Festival, presenting performed readings of excerpts from their plays.  It was without a doubt one of the highlights of the Festival.

In 2017 four Lotus plays premiered, including Michelle Law's Single Asian Female at La Boite Theatre Company (coming to Belvoir in 2018), Chi Vu's Coloured Aliens at the legendary La Mama Theatre, Merlynn Tong's Blue Bones produced by Playlab at the Brisbane Powerhouse and Disapol Savetsila’s Australian Graffiti at Sydney Theatre Company.

In 2018 two Lotus residencies will be offered at major theatre companies.  CAAP will be developing Siti Rubiyah by Katrina Irawati Graham as part of the Carriageworks 2018 In Development Program.
