Championing the Future of Contemporary Asian Australian Performance
Join us for an intimate dinner to support the launch of the New Work Fund.
For over two decades, CAAP has been dedicated to uplifting Asian Australian artists and fostering a more inclusive theatre industry. Today, we continue to develop and produce contemporary works by Asian Australian artists, and provide a platform for creative support and knowledge exchange through our initiatives and community events.
The New Work Fund will champion the development of new Asian Australian work by supporting artists with the time, space, and industry support to produce new, meaningful creative work.
This special event will be a launchpad for the New Work Fund, garnering momentum hot on the heels of CAAP’s recent successes. Guests will be treated to an exclusive music performance by Rainbow Chan (The Bridal Lament), and joined by special guest Benjamin Law, over a delightful culinary spread curated by the team at Lady Chu.
We look forward to welcoming you as a champion for the future of Asian Australian performance.

Each ticket includes a drink on arrival, a meal, wine at your table, and $200 tax-deductible donation to CAAP. As the wine at the table has been generously donate, any additional beverages may be purchased separately at the bar.

Over the past five years, CAAP has supported more than 25 lead artists to share their projects and develop their practice in conversation with peers and audiences at our fun end of year event! This November, Works in Progress continues CAAP’s commitment to the fearless creativity of Asian Australian artists, with five artists across disciplines taking a leap of faith to share their daring new works-in-development in this renewed annual showcase.
This year’s line-up features works by Donita Cruz, Paul Cordeiro, Ryuichi Fujimura, Keng Tan and Krishna Patel.
Works and artists are better off when they are met with a supportive eye in process. So, Works in Progress is an opportunity for performance makers to test their creations in front of an audience and receive peer feedback. Some things will never change, so after the show you are invited to stay for chats over some food.

Imelda
Donita Cruz is a Filipino writer and theatre-maker who has a keen interest in exploring the diaspora experience, based on Wangal Country. She is a graduate of WAAPA’s Bachelor of Performance Making and of its Screen Performance diploma. Cruz premiered the first iteration of her debut play, ‘IMELDA’, at The Blue Room Theatre in February 2024 with Sapatos Angels Collective. With it, she cemented her ability and ambition to make work that is honest, heartfelt, and (un)surprisingly hilarious.
Foreign Body
Paul Cordeiro has been performing for almost four decades, appearing on just about every major stage in Australia. He has spent more than 35 years dancing, creating and choreographing, performing in clubs, making solo and ensemble works, directing large-scale dance parties, touring major musicals and working as assistant choreographer on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony. For the past eighteen years he has toured extensively with Melbourne’s Finucane and Smith, while continuing to grow his practice as a singer, collaborator and storyteller.
Paul is currently developing ‘Foreign Body’, a new autobiographical work that blends monologue, dance and song. This story reflects on his life as an Asian immigrant from a large Catholic family, his sexuality, his artistic path and his search for a sense of home. It explores themes of family, identity, loss and becoming, with moments of tenderness, humour and reflection. Between the jacaranda and the chopsticks there is grief, discovery and the ongoing question of who we allow ourselves to be.
The Death of Dev Patel
Krishna Patel is the eldest daughter in a Kenyan-Indian family raised in Townsville, Queensland. She approaches stories like a manic dinner party host, adding a little something to please everyone, though it still may end up too spicy for most. Krishna is presenting a new stage work excerpt that plays with South Asian futurism through an absurd comedy lens, to explore the legacy and accountability of the Indian diaspora.
‘The Death of Dev Patel’ thrusts audiences into a post-Western Australia run entirely by the Asian diaspora (cry about it). The dynastic Patel family share a meal and a customary viewing of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’, in celebration of their beloved figurehead Dev Patel. Between inter-generational jabs and second helpings of chaat, the Dev-ali celebrations take a turn when ostracised cousin Sonal arrives, moments before breaking news of Dev Patel’s assassination. A provocatively funny look at culture, complicity and the performance of success in a post-colonial world.
Interior Exterior
Keng is a playwright who has written for La Boite Theatre’s Assembly initiative and participated in CAAP’s Playwrights Lab. He has been longlisted for the Griffin Award and was the recipient of the Daphne Roemerman Prize.
For Works in Progress, Keng will present Interior Exterior, a dark comedy about dreams, dual identities and the contradictions of belonging. Think Hollywood, home and headstrong daughters. The monologue follows Reverie Ku, a Singaporean actress in Los Angeles, as she navigates the polished surface of celebrity life alongside the quieter truths of family and cultural inheritance. The work explores the homes we build for ourselves and the homes we can never fully leave, wrestling with the pressures of being a third culture individual and the ongoing effort to reconcile values, expectations and identity within the family.
Finishing Touch
Ryuichi Fujimura is an independent dance artist based in Sydney. Since the mid-1990s, he has studied contemporary dance technique, improvisation, and choreography both in Australia and internationally.
Over the past two decades, Ryuichi has collaborated with both emerging and established artists across dance, theatre, opera, site-specific performance, and film. His artistic collaborators include Xavier Le Roy, Alan Schacher, Justin Shoulder, Vicki Van Hout, and Jim Sharman. He has also performed with companies such as Force Majeure, De Quincey Co., Opera Australia, Clockfire Theatre Co., and Sydney Dance Company.
Since beginning his choreographic practice in 2013, Ryuichi has created numerous works, including his critically acclaimed HERE NOW trilogy. In recent years, he has expanded his practice to encompass interdisciplinary collaborations with artists from diverse fields, including Mel O’Callaghan, WeiZen Ho, ArtHitecs, Alicia Frankovich, Hamed Sadeghi, and Justene Williams.
Connecting Asian Australian Playwrights with Australia’s foremost playwrights, artistic leaders and theatre companies.
Playwrights Lab demonstrates CAAP’s ongoing commitment to Asian Australian Playwrights and creating pathways to Australian mainstage theatres.
Delivered in collaboration with Australia’s mainstage theatre companies this day-long program convenes playwrights with artistic leaders, industry experts and established writers. Through facilitated discussion, practical workshops and peer to peer introductions, participants will gain invaluable insights into the programming and commissioning processes, all while forging connections and refining their craft.
At the core of Playwrights Lab is CAAP’s mission to address the underrepresentation of Asian Australian voices on stages. CAAP’s previous writers program LOTUS, delivered with Playwriting Australia (now Australian Plays Transform) supported over 70 writers, leaving an indelible mark on the national cultural landscape.
