CAAP Ticket Club is back! In partnership with Belvoir St Theatre, we’re bringing Asian Australian artists and their plus-ones to The Jungle and the Sea, written and directed by S. Shakthidharan & Eamon Flack.

From the team behind the smash-hit play Counting and Cracking, this is an exclusive chance to experience its powerful companion piece. Drawn from real-life testimonies and woven with threads of the Mahabharata and Antigone, the play follows one family’s epic journey to hold onto their dignity, safety and love against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s civil war.

After the show, we’ll be hanging out with members of the creative team and the crew at Belvoir over dinner. This is a rare opportunity to connect directly with the awesome artists behind one of the most talked-about works on Sydney stages right now, alongside fellow creatives from the CAAP Ticket Club community.

Artist Lab is a professional development program for Asian Australian artists. It provides a unique opportunity for participants to meet fellow artists and industry professionals, fostering learning, experimentation, skills development, and collaborative growth.

Over a week-long intensive, a select group of Asian Australian artists take part in masterclasses, workshops, and seminars led by accomplished industry experts. Each participant is paired with a partner organisation, enabling a deeper engagement with professional practice and building meaningful connections within the sector.

The Artist Lab is tailored to align with the creative aspirations of each participant, equipping them with tools and resources to apply to their ongoing artistic practice. Beyond personal development, the program encourages collaborations and connections that extend well beyond the week, contributing to the wider Asian Australian arts community.

Delivered in collaboration with leading performing companies and institutions, the Artist Lab forms part of CAAP’s broader suite of skills and sector development initiatives, including the CAAP Directors Initiative and the LOTUS Playwriting Project, reflecting CAAP’s ongoing commitment to nurturing Asian Australian creativity and contemporary performance practice.

Between 2018 and 2019, Contemporary Asian Australian Performance , in partnership with Melbourne Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company, ran the CAAP Directors Initiative, aimed at unearthing, nurturing and developing Asian Australian directors for the stage.

Together the four companies committed to working to identify, develop and embed Asian Australian directors in Australia’s three largest state theatre companies.

The CAAP Directors Initiative offered a tailored training program over two years for selected participants in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

In its first year, it included directing workshops, close observation of mainstage productions, and a range of professional development and networking opportunities. In its second year, the program provided hands-on directorial training and engagement with the host companies.

The initiative produced some of Australia’s leading directors and arts leaders, with outcomes that led to career advancements, new collaborations, and the development and presentation of new work.

A meeting place for artists and industry to share experiences, ideas and practice.

In some traditional societies, the Longhouse is the meeting place where the village gathers to share stories and bond as a community. CAAP’s Longhouse Program combines talks, performances, masterclasses and workshops. Everyone interested in Asian Australian contemporary performance is welcome to attend.

Our monthly, online, lunchtime catch-up is for Asian Australian producers and artists to connect, ask questions, and share experience. Whether you’re mid-project, sitting on an idea, or just keen to soak up some producer-y goodness, it’s a free, informal space for knowledge sharing across the country.

Happening every first Wednesday of the month (from August to November). It’s hosted by CAAP’s Executive Producer Justine Shih Pearson, with guests joining across the series. Bring your questions and your lunch!
