CAAP is auditioning actors for a new work, Siti Rubiyah by Katrina Irawati Graham, directed by Tessa Leong. A range of roles are available for actors aged 16 – 80. Actors with Indonesian background preferred. Further details below, including how to apply for an audition.

CASTING BRIEF: SITI RUBIYAH

Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) invites actors to submit an Expression of Interest to audition for an original new work.


Siti Rubiyah will be a large scale contemporary Indonesian-Australian work made for major festivals and theatres in Australia and internationally. Auditions for the following roles will be held in Sydney on Wed 26 September, with call backs to attend a workshop on Fri 28 September. Indonesian background preferred.

NENEK – female, aged 50-70s. Nenek is about to walk into the Sumatran jungle for the last time. She is elderly, but with a secret that gives her wisdom and inner strength. Nenek is the narrator of the play.

IRA – female, 20-25. Ira is Nenek’s granddaughter. A young, urban University student, with a secret of her own that is troubling. Desperate for her grandmother’s solace she accompanies her into the jungle.

SITI RUBIYAH – female, 18-30. The vulnerable young wife of a powerful dukun (shaman). Trapped in an abusive relationship, she dreams of escape, until she finds the power within herself.

WAK HITAM – male, 50-70s. A powerful shaman who lives deep in the jungle. He traps young women with the promise of a wonderful life.

ADINDA – female, 16-25. A lively, optimistic and naïve young woman. Wak Hitam’s new child-bride.

BUYUNG – male 20-30s. An impressionable, earnest and romantic young man who gives Siti Rubiyah hope of a better life.
