LONGHOUSE 2017

In some traditional societies, the Longhouse is the meeting place where the village gathers to share stories and knowledge and bond as a community.

CAAP’s Longhouse combines talks, performances, masterclasses and workshops with an opportunity to network.

All artists and arts workers interested in exploring Asian Australian themes through contemporary performance are welcome to attend and get involved.

DIVERSITY IS A WHITE WORD

At the beginning of this year, artist and academic Tania Canas published an article for Artshub titled, Diversity is a White Word. Very quickly, it gained traction over social media, igniting debate and support. The first Longhouse of 2017 is dedicated to unpacking and discussing – as a community - the provocative ideas in the article.  Hear from Tim Roseman (Playwriting Australia), Lena Nahlous (Diversity Arts Australia) and Kate Cherry (NIDA) as they respond to questions about how they are tackling the question of diversity in their organisations and practice. And we’d love to know what you think, what your experience is and what your questions are as we open out the conversation for wider discussion. The evening will be facilitated by writer/performer Jenevieve Chang.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF AUSTRALIAN GRAFFITI AT STC

“You can’t stay away from this place. It’s your home." Ben, Australian Graffiti

Join us at Sydney Theatre Company for our second Longhouse event as we step behind the scenes of Australian Graffiti ahead of its world premiere. Developed through the Lotus Playwriting Program, an initiative of CAAP and Playwriting Australia and supported by the Girgensohn Foundation,  and commissioned by Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Graffiti follows the journey of a Thai family looking for a place to belong as they take their restaurant from one country town to another.  Playwright Disapol Savetsila, director Paige Rattray, STC Literary Manager Polly Rowe, cast and creatives discuss the journey from page to stage of this remarkable new Australian work. Refreshments will be served at the Bar at the End of the Wharf afterwards.

The Collective for Longhouse

Works by The Collective

The last Longhouse of the year will be a showcase of works-in-progress by members of The Collective, an independent gathering of multi-skilled, multidisciplinary Asian-Australian performance artists eager to reclaim control over their practice. Members of the collective first met and collaborated together during the Director’s Workshop organised by CAAP and STC in 2016.

We create work and we support the development of new stories. In an industry where our experience has been historically marginalised, we also provide a forum for knowledge sharing, skills development, artistic solidarity and staying match-fit.
